Staying in Tankwa

Tankwa is a fantastic place, and the accommodation we booked was one of 5 chalets called ‘Elandsberg’. Each is eco-friendly and made from mud. The walls are thick to keep the heat out in summer, and the heat in during winter. The rood is locally sourced reeds and the floor is screeded concrete, which may be frigid underfoot during winter. Thankfully, during our stay it was balmy.

There’s no electricity, so the kitchen ran on gas for fridge and cooker. Lighting is by the provided storm lanterns. Water is from local boreholes and NOT FOR DRINKING. we took bottled drinks in the form of beer and wine and these proved more than adequate.

Activities in Tankwa range from naval-gazing to walks to 4×4 offroad trails.
